Hello folks,
with the response we had from the last post (the debate still continues) iv decided to put up another, again something that began between me and mina :p (we just dont agree on ANYTHING)
:)

here goes

does the fact that an artist (or a band) not write there own songs make them untalented? My point of view in particularly with vocal artists is that singing is in itself a talent, as is the style that they blend with their voice. Minas was that its just not personal enough and that anyone can sing (if iv got your opinion wrong minz please correct me).

Ehsan... i expect you to take a part in this... ;)

lets hear it

does that mean that it's not personal enough if you act out something written by someone else? meaning all drama is a load of crap and time wasted?!

come to think of it then, so's photography considering that you're only trying to capture something that has already been created and attempting to give it your own vision. it works the same way with singing. something's been created and you're trying to give it your own vision, your style and your voice. i guess a good case would be covers of songs. you cover a song 1. to pay tribute and 2. to render it in YOUR style. if it's not personal enough then i suppose i shall start hating DMB's version of Watchtower! Sad!

surprisingly i agree with Saad, taking the example that he gave .. a photograph is nothing but giving your touch to something that already exists or looking at existing things in your own way or showing to the world how you look at existing things .. keyword: "EXIST"

similarly for art in any form .. i mean art is not just restricted to you creating EVERYTHING .. think of a painter who paints a subject .. mona lisa was a god damned subject .. why is it so special .. 'cus it was painted in a particular way ..

singing is not about writing the lyrics as well as singing 'em .. a good example would be leonard cohen's halelujah .. he sang it but it was BAD ! however .. along came jeff buckley and it became a hit .. for the record, cohen's version had been around for a while but never became a big hit, it was buckley's version that did the trick !

so writing songs is a separate form of art all together and in no way can it be classified alongside singing .. these are two very distinct fields .. look at them individually .. sheesh guys i expected the two of you to be more clever !!

mina .. think of nusrat fateh ali khan .. think of abida parveen .. think of all these guys who're singing sufi-kalaam and other such .. think of YOU reading out neruda's sonnet 17 at that event ..

look for the distinction between writing and performing ..

man i've got so many other examples in my head right now .. if anyone wants more .. just lemme know ..

take care folks ..
peace.
